After Seven Years in the Shelter, Kylo Finally Went Home

Kylo Jace spent seven years at the SPCA of Anne Arundel County in Maryland, longer than any other dog there. He’s the kind of dog who needs time before he’ll trust you, so a rotating group of staff and volunteers had spent years earning their turns to walk him.

Then a woman started visiting. Twice a week for seven months, walk after walk, until she was firmly inside his circle. Shelter staff helped Kylo practice car rides and set up home visits so the big day wouldn’t feel like a shock. On July 11 he walked out the door for the last time. “There wasn’t a dry eye in the house,” the shelter wrote afterward. His adoption fee was covered in memory of a longtime volunteer who had adored him.

The SPCA’s hope is that Kylo’s story nudges someone else toward the dog who has been waiting the longest.
