Volunteers Are Hand-Building a New Four-Mile Trail in the Hills Above San Luis Obispo

Every Wednesday since March 2025, a crew of volunteers led by City of San Luis Obispo ranger maintenance worker Niels Grether has hiked into the Reservoir Canyon Open Space to cut a brand-new path into the slope, often working four-hour shifts and sometimes hiking up to an hour just to reach the day’s worksite. Rocky ground has been the toughest part. “The trail is there; there’s just dirt and rock in the way,” Grether told KSBY.

The Backburn Trail starts near the top of Lizzie Street and will run about four miles, climb more than 1,000 feet, and link up with the existing Reservoir Canyon Trail, with views stretching from Point Sal to Morro Rock. Crews are now on the final quarter-mile, and the city expects the finishing touches by the end of the year.
